Barbadians will get an opportunity to cheer on the seven contestants in this year’s Shine Like a Diamond pageant when they participate in a motorcade through Bridgetown and its environs on Saturday, March 7.

The pageant, which highlights the skills and talents of young women with disabilities, comes off on Sunday, March 29, at Sandals Barbados, St. Lawrence Gap, Christ Church, under the patronage of Minister of People Empowerment and Elder Affairs, Cynthia Forde.

The motorcade will leave the National Disabilities Unit (NDU), Maxwelton, Collymore Rock, St. Michael, at 10:00 a.m. travelling along Lower Collymore Rock, Jemmotts Lane, Lower Bay Street, Fairchild Street, and along the Charles Duncan O’Neal Bridge.

It will continue along Wharf Road, Hincks Street, Princess Alice Highway, Prescod Boulevard, Redman Drive, Cheapside, Chapel Street, Prince Alfred Street and on to Broad Street.

The motorcade will then turn on to High Street, Lower Roebuck Street, Crumpton Street, Constitution Road, through the Halls Road Roundabout on to Belmont Road, and through the Nita Barrow Roundabout to Pine Road.  From there, it turns on to Collymore Rock and back to the NDU.

Included in the motorcade will be a music truck and along the route, the contestants will be accompanied by dancers as well as wheelchair participants.

The Shine Like a Diamond pageant, which was conceptualized by Special Envoy for Persons with Disabilities, Roslyn Hurley, was first held in 2015, and again in 2016.

She explained: “The purpose is to help young ladies with disabilities to build confidence and self-esteem and to allow our nation’s community of disabled youth to see how people that face challenges similar to their own can rise above those challenges and set a new standard for what it means to be a successful person with a disability.”
