Barbados??? only living national hero, the Right Excellent Sir Garfield Sobers, is the first recipient of the National Sports Awards??? Lifetime Achievement Award.

The world???s greatest all-rounder cricketer was given this honour on Saturday, February 1, during the 2013 National Sports Awards Ceremony held at the Frank Collymore Hall in the City.

Minister of Culture, Sports and Youth, Stephen Lashley, presented Sir Garfield with a beautifully carved mahogany plaque, while the audience gave the living legend a standing ovation.

Sir ???Garry???, as he is affectionately known, graciously accepted the award, bowed to the crowd and said: ???Thank you!???

The Sports Minister told the audience that the country was lucky the cricketing legend lived here and added that the former West Indies Captain was among those who contributed to sports and its development in the country. He added: ???Sir Garfield is one of the key persons we should try to exemplify in Barbados??????

Sir Garfield Sobers grew up in Bay Land, St. Michael, and played 93 tests for the West Indies. He scored 8,032 runs at an average of 57.78, took 235 wickets at an average of 34.03 and snagged 109 catches.

He played for Barbados, South Australia and Nottinghamshire among major teams. In addition to batting, Sir Garfield fielded as well as bowled left-arm orthodox, wrist spin and fast-medium.

In 1975, he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II for his meritorious service to cricket.
