Early childhood education in Barbados will be given a boost when 60 teachers graduate this weekend from Wheelock College, Boston with either a postgraduate certification in Early Childhood Education or the MSc. in Education in Early Childhood Settings.

The ceremony will take place in the auditorium of the Derrick Smith Vocational School & Centre, on Sunday, October 14, at 6:00 p.m.

Minister of Education, Science, Technology and Innovation, Ronald Jones, will deliver the opening address, while President of Wheelock College, Dr. David Chard, will give the commencement address.

A collaborative effort on the part of Wheelock College, Erdiston Teachers’ Training College and the Barbados Community College, the graduate training was coordinated by the Higher Education Development Unit, a department of the Ministry of Education, Science, Technology and Innovation. It was funded predominantly by the Maria Holder Memorial Trust.

Since this cohort of teachers was drawn from primary schools across the island, it is expected that Barbados will continue building on a foundation in universal school competency in early childhood management and maximise the benefits from useful, professional collaboration among the team.

This is not the first graduation from Wheelock College. Last year, 25 teachers received their qualifications from Wheelock’s one-year certificate programme in Early Childhood Education.

Wheelock College, located in Fenway, caters to students who want to change their world and improve the lives of children and families through their careers as leaders, advocates, and professionals.
