The Samuel Jackman Prescod Institute of Technology (SJPI) and the Barbados Institute of Management and Productivity (BIMAP) will be collaborating on areas of mutual interest at the start of the new academic year.

Principal of the SJPI, Ian Drakes, and Executive Director of BIMAP, Dr. Sonia Greenidge-Franklyn, signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) at BIMAP’s office, Wildey, St. Michael, this morning.

During the brief signing ceremony, Dr.  Greenidge-Franklyn said BIMAP was proud to engage with the SJPI.  She disclosed that under the MOU, the SJPI would be assisting them with a project to transform that campus into an environmentally conscious space. “BIMAP is cognisant of the fact that we need to change the way that we use energy, so [we] are very much on board in terms of greening the campus.  So, we’ll shortly be a project where the campus would be going green.

“As part of that greening process, we’ve formed a collaborative arrangement with the Samuel Jackman Prescod Institute of Technology, where we will involve their students in some of the activities in which we are taking part.  We’re also going to be involving their staff in some of the training activities at BIMAP,” the Executive Director explained.

Mr. Drakes said the MOU “speaks volumes to the collaboration that is happening between government and private training institutions”.

“We are leading by example and we are most excited to be at this juncture with BIMAP.  This is part of the technical vocational youth training as well, in terms of helping our young graduates…,” he said.

Mr. Drakes added that this collaboration also presented job opportunities for those in the growing renewable energy sector.

The areas of cooperation to be explored under the MOU include: industrial job attachments for students pursuing studies in solar photovoltaic, electrical and plumbing installation; job training on a rotation basis for registered SJPI students within their area of study, and public relations activities to promote the use of renewable energy.
