Two students in the Refrigeration and Air Conditioning (RAC) programme at the Samuel Jackman Prescod Institute of Technology (SJPI) are the recipients of the National Ozone Depleting Substances Phase Out Support Scholarship for the 2019-2020 academic year.

Romel Dottin and James Godding received the scholarships worth BDS$1,100 each, from the Ministry of Environment and National Beautification, during a ceremony this morning at the SJPI.

Both students were awarded in recognition of their “satisfactory performance, excellent attendance and exemplary conduct” in completing the diploma in RAC.

The Ministry partnered with the SJPI back in 2014 to offer the scholarship as well as to provide equipment, tools and devices to support the upgrade of the RAC laboratory at SJPI.

The scholarship provides funding support in the form of payment of tuition and a $700 grant towards the purchase of tools to recipients. To date, 18 students have been awarded the scholarship.

Acting Principal of the SJPI, Audrey Jones-Drayton, said the partnership with the Ministry of Environment complemented the greening initiatives already implemented on campus.

“Our curriculum is integrated with topics related to greening and the use of the refrigerants and the change out to friendlier refrigerants is a part of that. What is happening here today, complements what is happening on campus because there are other green initiatives as well.

“We are recipients of Photovoltaic panels as part of Government’s Smart Energy programme and we are currently engaged in a consultancy with that same entity that will allow us to help society to be more aware of greening as we strive towards achieving being fossil fuel free by 2030,” she explained.

Chairman of the Board of Management, Shelton Perkins, said the Board and the staff at the SJPI were committed to ensuring that the curricula met the “ever changing work environment” with input from entities such as the Ministry of Environment.

He also offered some advice to the scholarship recipients. “I want to congratulate Romel and James, and remind them of the saying ‘to whom much is given, much is required’. Maximise these opportunities and having had someone invested in you, when you have achieved, invest in someone. May you always be a human demonstration of the effective instruction given here at the SJPI,” he stated.
