Eighteen students from the Samuel Jackman Prescod Polytechnic???s (SJPP) Garment Technology course, who showcased their designs this year at BMEX, are now part of an industrial placement project.
They have been placed at a number of factories and with designers across the island including Carib Island Designs; Mapps Uniform Unlimited as well as renowned fashion designers, Pat Brathwaite and Cassandra Mottley.
Additionally, in a new move by the SJPP, five first-year students are currently busy making the Spring/Summer 2015 collection for Fifth Element, a local designer label by Andrea King.
The initiative started on Monday, June 16, will see students working daily from 9:00 a.m.to 4:00 p.m. on the designs. It is expected to last for five weeks.
Instructor of the Garment Technology course and Coordinator of the project, Joy Prime in expressing gratitude on behalf of the students said: ???Our girls did very well at BMEX once again this year; we had 25 garment technology students showing. A couple of them have been approached to reproduce pieces for sale. This has been so good for their self-esteem and their professional development.
???We welcome the opportunity given to our girls by the factories and designers. The Fifth Element attachment is an opportunity for the students to work on a real contract while further developing competencies in pattern drafting and sample making to industry standards.???
