A Government Minister has challenged Barbadians not to sweep issues relating to slavery and its impact on the black race under the carpet.

Minister of Community Development and Culture, Steven Blackett, made this appeal recently during a ceremony to unveil a plaque for the UNESCO “Slave Route Project” on the building housing Chefette Restaurant, Upper Broad Street.

“No one can dispute the fact that, not only here in Barbados, but the world over, there is a need to ‘break the silence’.  So, we owe it to ourselves to talk about it [slavery] freely and frankly so that the healing process can truly take place,” Mr. Blackett implored.

Although slavery was an abominable act, the Culture Minister was quick to point out that the UNESCO project was not another tourist attraction, but represented an important step towards “breaking the silence”  about captivity.

“By sharing information about slavery, we can work towards making sure that the world will never again witness such an act of mass human degradation,” Mr Blackett stressed.
