Patrons at this year’s Agrofest can look forward to several new additions to the national exhibition which will be held from Friday, February 24 to Sunday, February 26, at Queen’s Park.
Coordinator, Thedore Fraser of the Barbados Agricultural Society (BAS), said in keeping with the theme of the event – Renewable Energy: Powering Agriculture to Success – several clients would have booths illustrating the use of solar powered technology and recycling.
"Several of our clients will be focusing heavily on this theme. There will be an exhibit looking at recycling, particularly new initiatives which can turn waste into energy. Another will have a hydroponic facility which uses solar power to assist in the growth of plants. In addition, we will have a renewable energy theme park and a solar house, so patrons can come and learn a lot more about this type of technology and still enjoy themselves," he pointed out.
Mr. Fraser added that the BAS would be leading the way by using solar powered equipment at Agrofest, as a means of showing farmers the benefits of such technology.
"We will be incorporating solar power in our livestock housing at the show. We will also be using solar power for our security monitoring systems and a solar powered generator will be on hand and provide electricity for the show," Mr. Fraser explained.
The Agrofest Coordinator revealed that children will have a special treat this year with an enlarged playing area at Weymouth ???B’.
"New and exciting slides and rides will be available for children and a number of other items catering to children will be erected in that area. It will be one of the best children’s areas for any exhibition or outdoor event," Mr. Fraser remarked.
Prior to the exhibition, the BAS will also host a public forum on renewable energy in collaboration with First Citizens Investment Services on Monday, February 13, at 6:30 p.m. It is entitled: The Green Revolution: A New Paradigm and takes place at the Grande Salle, Central Bank of Barbados, Bridgetown. The speaker will be Lecturer in the Department of Physics, St. Augustine Campus, University of the West Indies, Dr. Indra Haraksingh.
In addition, the BAS will be introducing several changes to this year’s event to ensure the exhibition runs even smoother.
Additional parking will be provided for patrons at the Insurance Corporation of Barbados car park at Roebuck Street, another ticket booth will be erected at the entrance of Weymouth ???B’, and a new public entrance will be available for ticket holders via Weymouth ???B’.
The Agrofest Secretariat will also hold a service of thanksgiving on Sunday, February 5, at the St. Barnabas Anglican Church, St. Barnabas, St. Michael, at 9:30 a.m.
