Government’s Solid Waste Project Unit?? (SWPU) is continuing?? its?? bid to ensure that Barbadians?? view garbage, not simply as waste, but?? as a valuable resource to be capitalised upon.

This, as the department prepares to host the second Home Composting workshop for the year, next Thursday, May 17. Slated to educate participants on the benefits of composting from waste management as well as agricultural and horticultural perspectives, it will be catered specifically to the Maas Clinic.

Word of this has come from?? Waste Management Coordinator?? with?? the SWPU, Thora??Lorde, who?? said in addition to next Thursday’s??workshop, the department was also awaiting confirmation?? for?? a second?? one this month, following a successful staging in?? March with the Sugar Cane Club hotel.

According to??Ms. Lorde,?? the?? department, in collaboration with the Future Centre??Trust,?? had been facilitating requests from various??groups??interested in participating including??the Diabetes Association?? of Barbados, Parish Ambassadors, as well as?? some hotels.

"As?? the?? department responsible for solid waste management, we want to educate Barbadians about what they can do with their??garbage?? in order to reduce?? the amount of organic??refuse??finding its way into the??waste stream. Instead of placing greater burden on the Sanitation Service Authority, the idea is for householders?? to practise??recycling at home,?? with the added benefit of having an end product that can be returned to the garden," she underlined.

While as solid waste practitioners they are qualified to educate householders about the benefits which accrue to the agricultural sector, Ms. Lorde said recently the team at the SWPU had been assisted by Agronomist, David Bynoe, from the Ministry of Agriculture, as well as officers from the Barbados Agricultural Development & Marketing Corporation.

Ms. Lorde stressed that the Department was willing and available to prepare these workshops for communities and other organisations interested in learning about composting on the small to medium scale.

To this end, persons interested in having workshops staged in their communities are therefore asked to contact the SWPU at 427-5910.
