Some major changes are coming to this year’s Crop-Over Festival, particularly in relation to the venue for two major events.

Minister of Community Development and Culture, Steve Blackett, made the announcement yesterday during a Crop-Over Sponsors’ Breakfast at the Sherbourne Conference Centre, which was coordinated by the National Cultural Foundation (NCF).

He said last year the idea was mooted to use Kensington Oval as a venue for some of the Crop-Over events and his Ministry, through the NCF, had sought to put this plan into action for the 2008 season.

As a result, the Pic-O-De-Crop finals and Cohobblopot will be held at the Fontabelle facility on Friday, August 1, and Sunday, August 3, respectively. This year’s Junior Kadooment will also take place at that venue on Saturday, July 26.

This year will also see the introduction of an Inter-Parish Float Competition, organised by the NCF, the Community Development Department and the Community Independence Celebrations Secretariat.

It will provide an opportunity for community groups, organisations and interested individuals to creatively use floats depicting some aspect of community life in their parish and Barbados.

NCF Chairman, Ken Knight, also announced that there would be changes to Kadooment this year, with two routes being planned for revellers. In addition to the traditional route, masqueraders will be able to travel from the National Stadium along Bush Hall and Bank Hall to the Spring Garden Highway.

The festival gets under way in earnest on Friday, May 9, with the first Crop-Over Cavalcade at the NCF Car Park, West Terrace, St. James, at 8:00 p.m.
