Staffers of the Ministry of Family, Culture, Sports and Youth will get an opportunity to become familiar with the history of the City when they go on a two-hour Historic Bridgetown heritage tour this Sunday, August 7, beginning at 8:00 a.m.
It will be conducted by Senior Lecturer in History at the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus, Dr. Karl Watson.
The public officers will meet at Pierhead and some of the places they will visit include the Screw Dock, the Independence Arch, Carlisle House, Jubilee Gardens, St. Mary’s and James Street Methodist churches, the Jewish Synagogue, the Montefiore Fountain, the Old Masonic Lodge Building and Palmetto Square.
Giving the rationale for the tour, an official in the Division of Culture explained that internal sensitisation about Historic Bridgetown had been carried out within that section, but it was felt the wider Ministry should also have access to the educational information.
Historic Bridgetown and its Garrison was inscribed by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation as a World Heritage Site on June 25, 2011. World Heritage sites are places that are of Outstanding Universal Value to humanity, not only for the countries in which they are located. These sites are inscribed on the World Heritage list "to be protected for future generations to appreciate and enjoy".
There are approximately 936 heritage sites across the world and there are now seven in this region.
