Spain is on a mission to capture a seat on the United Nations Security Council for 2015-2016 and is seeking the assistance of Barbados and other CARICOM countries in this endeavour.

That was the message from Spain’s Ambassador Manuel Quesada to Prime Minister Freundel Stuart when they met on Tuesday at Parliament.

Mr. Quesada is on a special mission for the candidacy of Spain to the UN Security Council and he delivered a letter from Spain???s Prime Minister, Mariano Rajoy.??Ambassador Quesada said Spain has had a long relationship with Barbados and CARICOM and disclosed that his country wants to increase bilateral cooperation with the region.

Prime Minister Stuart agreed that both countries have enjoyed good diplomatic relations since the establishment of a formal bilateral relationship in 1980 and thanked Spain for the contribution it has been making to the region. He said that even though Spain had gone through difficulties within recent times, it has continued to play its role at the multilateral level.

He advised that Barbados would consult with its CARICOM partners regarding Spain’s bid for a seat on the United Nations Security Council, since, ordinarily, CARICOM Member States try, as far as possible, to act collaboratively on matters of foreign policy.
