Differentiated Instruction is the title of an upcoming workshop geared towards principals and administrators involved in the Schools’ Positive Behaviour Management Programme (SPBMP).

The Ministry of Education and Human Resource Development will conduct the four-day training from Tuesday, September 25 to Friday, September 28, at the St. Leonard’s Boys’ School, Richmond Gap, St. Michael.

A key aim of the training is to have more teachers utilising the strategies and information given for planning to reflect individual differences which children present. It will examine the use of this methodology in schools across the island and important skills needed to aid its effectiveness in all schools.

Differentiated instruction is a concept that emphasises learning for all students, irrespective of their capability. It is characterised by proactive planning and such planning must be for each student – the high achiever; those who are mid stream and the student who is considered average.

"It takes into consideration individual differences of students in a classroom and seeks to meet the needs of all. Apart from the intellectual ability, it looks also at pupil interests and readiness," said Education Officer, Janice Reid, Focal Point for SPBMP here on the island.

Main facilitator for the workshop will be Professor Emeritus, Winston King from the Faculty of Education (Curriculum and Science) University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus. Two visiting Education Officers from Antigua and Barbuda will also be in attendance. They are Focal Point officials for that country’s Child Friendly Programme, Desiree Antonio and Education Officer (Secondary Schools), Claire Browne.

The workshop will run from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. each day in the auditorium of the St. Leonard’s Boys’ School.
