Students in the junior department of the St. Lawrence Primary School will engage in a Speak-off competition tomorrow, Tuesday, December 4, at 9:30 a.m. at the school in Christ Church.

Those in Classes 1 and 2 will speak on the topic An Interesting Place I have Visited, while the upper juniors – Class 3 and 4 – will speak on A sustainable Barbados – What We Can Do.

At the end of the competition, the children will receive a number of trophies, sponsored by the Lions Club, as well as certificates.

Coordinator of the event and Class 3 teacher, Janelle Little, speaking about its significance, said: "We are trying to develop in children good oral skills and to enhance their self-esteem as they present orally. We have realised that children are not willing to speak and to share their ideas or opinions.

"Some do not think that they have an opinion or even where they have one, that it matters. So we are hoping to let them find their voice."
