The Special Olympics Barbados is an extraordinary event, which highlights athletes with excellent sportsmanship and outstanding athletic skills.

This was evident as the Special Olympics Barbados 33rd Annual National Games took place at the National Stadium last Thursday. It showcased approximately 300 athletes with disabilities, in a variety of sporting disciplines.

Under the motto "Let me win, but if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt", athletes ranging from ages eight to 30 years, competed in wheelchair races, 25, 50,100, 200 and 400 metre runs, 4×100 relays, the long jump and the softball throw.

This year’s Special Olympics saw the participation of a number of schools from across the island. They were: All Saints Primary, Ann Hill School, Challenor Creative Centre, Charles F. Broome, Children’s Development Centre, Children’s Development Workshop, Eagle Hall Primary Annex, Ellerton Primary Annex, Erdiston Primary Annex, Elayne Scantlebury Centre, Hilda Skeene Primary, St. Matthew Primary Annex, St. Stephen Primary, the Learning Centre and the Thelma Vaughan Home.

In addition to last week’s National Games, Special Olympics Barbados will continue to host a number of sporting activities throughout the year, such as soccer, handball, tennis, volleyball, road tennis, basketball, floor hockey and cricket.
