Students from 12 primary schools will get an opportunity to learn more about mental health when they participate in the inaugural spelling competition of the Psychiatric Hospital next month.
It will comprise a preliminary, semifinal and final round. Schools are expected to participate in this knock-out competition where each losing school will be eliminated and the winner will move on to the next round.
Schools were selected by the Community Psychiatric Nurse attached to their area. These are Arthur Smith, St. Christopher, Hilda Skeene, St. Philip, Wilkie Cumberbatch, St. Judes, Roland Edwards, St. Andrew’s, St. John, St. Elizabeth, Belmont and Hindsbury Primary.
The aim of the competition is to create awareness among the youth about mental illness and assist them in developing strategies to maintain good mental health.
The preliminaries will be conducted at the Errol Barrow Centre for Creative Imagination, Cave Hill Campus of the University of the West Indies on November 3, 4 and 5. The semifinals and finals, will be held in the Caribbean Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) Studios, from November 19 to November 27.
