Barbados’ Minister of Sports, Stephen Lashley, has disclosed that a Sports Development Act is coming for the island.

While addressing the 2011 Williams Digicel International Race Meet and 40th Anniversary Celebrations of the Bushy Park Racing Circuit at Bushy Park, St. Philip, Mr. Lashley said yesterday the Act would be designed to accelerate the development of sports as an industry in Barbados.

He told the racing enthusiasts attending the meet: "My Ministry is currently researching this proposed legislation, with a view to initiating early dialogue with the sporting community. Among other things, it is expected that this legislation will streamline the various incentives offered to the sector and simplify the process by which the various organisations may access these incentives."

The Minister expressed confidence that the development of this sector would bring with it the provision of much needed opportunities for entrepreneurship in the direct and indirect support services to motor sports.

He, therefore, urged Barbadians to "re-initialise your creativity" and capitalise on this opportunity to earn revenue, while at the same time contributing to the nation’s sports legacy.

During his address, Mr. Lashley congratulated the racing community on reaching the significant milestone of 40 years in motor sports and praised the sponsors for their contribution to the development of the sport.
