Young people have been advised that there are numerous career opportunities in sports that go beyond the playing of games.

Minister of Culture, Sports and Youth, Stephen Lashley, made this assertion while giving the feature address at the finals of the 4th Annual Inter-Parish Road Tennis Tournament, held at Springer Memorial School last Friday.

???A key part of restructuring our economy is the creation of new opportunities. Sports is one such source to be explored by our young people in their discipline of choice,??? the Minister stated.

He pointed out that the traditional job market was undergoing radical change and suggested that youngsters could consider areas such as sports journalism, refereeing, broadcasting and the production of equipment.

The Sports Minister also alluded to his ministry???s thrust to promote sports as a business and a means of generating additional revenue for the economy.

Singling out road tennis, Mr. Lashley noted that the island???s indigenous sport was growing within Barbados and also gaining attention overseas.

Disclosing that he ???opened dialogue with sports television giant ESPN with regards to featuring road tennis on their stations???, he explained that the National Sports Council was mandated to promote road tennis locally, regionally and internationally.

???One of the most lucrative areas to earn revenue in the sports industry is through television and broadcast rights. It is therefore imperative that we ensure that the necessary intellectual property processes are in place to facilitate the creation of possible revenue streams for both players and the Barbadian economy,??? Mr. Lashley said.
