Ivorn Mcknee testing out his new vehicle under the watchful eyes of officials from Simpson Motors and the National Sports Council’s Board.

Barbados’ Sports Personality for 2008, Ivorn McKnee, is determined to win more medals this year.

Mr. McKnee made this disclosure today after accepting a navy blue 1.5 Suzuki Swift from Sales Manager of Simpson Motors, Kevin Beckles, and Chairman of the National Sports Council (NSC), Henry Inniss, at the National Stadium. The car was donated by Simpson Motors and was one of several prizes the NSC presented to Mr. McKnee for copping the coveted National Sports Personality title.

Mr. McKnee told the media that he would be competing at the Pan American Weightlifting Championships in June and that he was hoping he would do well. “I want to win there, or get a medal, and I will be looking to win the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championship this year as well,” he said.

He further stated that he was “training rigorously” for the 2012 Olympics in London, since he wanted to “give a good showing, or even medal there”. “Once everything goes well in my training and I am healthy, you can expect big things,” he remarked confidently.

Mr. Inniss said the NSC was pleased to make the presentation, especially since Mr. McKnee was “a very deserving awardee”. He also thanked Simpson Motors for its outstanding contribution to sports, stating that it donated the car at very short notice. Mr. Beckles stressed that the car dealership was thrilled to be associated with the presentation, adding that it was appropriate that a “championship vehicle such as the Suzuki Swift be presented to a champion athlete”.

After the presentation with the car, Mr. McKnee said the car was a good reward for his hard work and he encouraged other sportsmen to continue to aim for excellence in their discipline.
