Minister of State in the Ministry of Education and Human Resource Development, Patrick Todd

“Primary education, whether public or private, would be narrow and sterile, if it were devoid of opportunities for creativity and expression of the wide array of human experiences.”

This assessment has come from Minister of State in the Ministry of Education and Human Resource Development, Patrick Todd, as he addressed the Primary Schools’ Choir Competition last Sunday.

Stressing the importance of music to the curriculum, Minister Todd pointed out that studying this discipline and/or playing an instrument offered the student “not only lifelong enjoyment and appreciation of music, but also a chance to explore the passion of melody”.

“Children as creative beings require outlets for positive self expression. They crave a release for their energies and inner thoughts. These necessary releases may be obtained through music,” he opined.

Noting that people often highlighted the breakdown in communication among various groups in society, Mr. Todd stressed that music was an important method of creating dialogue that was underutilised.

“Music, the universal language, provides unlimited opportunities for closer communication. Thus, in the face of changing fashions, mores and times, music bears the potential to bring unity and healing to humankind as it breaks down walls of misunderstanding and inflexibility,” he stressed.
