Springer Memorial Secondary School is celebrating 50 years of contributing to education in Barbados.

Celebrations began yesterday with a thanksgiving service at The Mount of Praise Church, Tudor Bridge, St. Michael.

On Wednesday, October 1, the school will hold its Founder’s Day ceremony, which will see the unveiling of a plaque by Minister of Education, Science, Technology and Innovation, Ronald Jones, at the Government Hill, St. Michael, institution. This begins at 9:00 a.m.

Later that day, from 1:00 to 6:00 p.m. there will be a session called Springer in the Community on the school grounds, which is expected to be a fun evening for friends and families of the school and others in the community. It will include karaoke and dominoes and food will be on sale.

The following day, Thursday, October 2, past students and teachers will come up against their present counterparts as they participate in several fun activities during a Games Evening. This starts at 2:00 p.m.

Celebrations will culminate on Saturday, October 4, with an Awards Dinner & Ball at Hilton Barbados, Needhams Point, St. Michael, from 6:30 p.m. for the entire Springer family and alumni.

Springer Memorial Secondary School was established on October 1,1964. With a present roll of over 1,000, the school caters solely to girls, who are encouraged to pursue subjects ranging from the Humanities, Languages, Sciences, Commercial Studies and Home Economics.

The school, which has, for 14 years, commanded the lead in the Girls Division of the Barbados Secondary Schools??? Athletics Championships, also affords students the opportunity to participate in extra-curricular activities such as steel pan, swimming, Art &Craft, hockey, volleyball, basketball, netball and football.

The girls are also part of the Duke of Edinburgh Awards Scheme and engage in public speaking, creative writing and debating. Last year, the school won the Inter-school Singing Competition with its 100-Voice Choir.

The Principal of Springer Memorial is Pauline Benjamin and Chairman of the Board is Patricia Hackett-Codrington.
