The Sanitation Service Authority (SSA) will kick off its 40th anniversary celebrations this week in fine style!

Under the theme: ???40 years of keeping Barbados clean!’ activities will get underway this Monday, September 7. Staff will receive greater insight into handling their various publics, when Marvo Manning delivers a lecture on ???Customer Service’ at the Headquarters of the National Union of Public Workers (NUPW), Dalkeith Road, St.Michael, beginning at 9:00 a.m.

On Tuesday, September 8, the Authority will launch its Education Programme at nine primary schools. On that day, supervisors and superintendents will visit Wilkie Cumberbatch; Grantley Prescod; St. John; St. Mark’s; Wesley Hall; Westbury; Luther Thorne; Gordon Greenidge and St. Christopher Primary Schools, to educate students and teachers about correct refuse disposal.??

On Wednesday, September 9, SSA staff will trade their tools for a day of frolic during a ???Fun Day’ at the Banks Grounds, from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Workers will compete in team sports including cricket, dominoes and football.

The management of personal finances will be the topic of the day, on Thursday, September 10, when the department stages a lecture on ???Money Talk’???? at 9:00 a.m. at the NUPW.?? It will be delivered by University of the West Indies’ Lecturer, Donley Carrington.

On Friday, September 11, attention will turn to engendering healthy lifestyles when a ???Health Fair’ is staged at Jubilee Gardens, Bridgetown, beginning at 10:00 a.m. Some 20 public and private sector entities, will mount display booths at the Fair, which will feature healthy foods; exercise sessions; blood and glucose testing and cooking demonstrations.

The curtain will come down on the week of activities on Sunday, September 13, with a picnic at Farley Hill, St. Peter, from noon until 6:00 p.m. The honouring of retirees will be among the highlights of the staff picnic.

The Sanitation and Cemeteries Board was established on September 2, 1969, and on March 1, 1975, an Act to establish the Authority was introduced. The department’s main functions are: the collection and disposal of refuse; street cleaning; the operation of public baths and conveniences and the administration of five public cemeteries.
