Government is seeking to establish a collection programme through the Sanitation Service Authority (SSA) dedicated to green waste, or recycling.

This was revealed by Minister of the Environment and Drainage, Dr. Denis Lowe, during an interview with the Barbados Government Information Service.

Dr. Lowe said his Ministry was presently exploring the possibility of making separation bins available for residents to purchase at a minimal cost, and or colour- coded bags for recycling garbage.

???We are also planning for specific collection days when residents will know that the green waste collection vehicle will pass through their neighbourhood to collect glass or plastics,??? he disclosed.

To make this possible, the Minister stated that initially some trucks would be dedicated to such collections on specific days, while there were also plans afoot to have some of the existing trucks outfitted with an internal separation system in the long term. ???The next fleet of vehicles which we bring in will include some of those trucks,??? he noted.

Dr. Lowe explained that a separation truck would be able to go straight to the waste-to-energy plant, while regular trucks collecting the recyclable waste will continue going to the Sustainable Barbados Recycling Centre where the solid waste would be separated from the recyclable items and taken to the landfill.

Such trucks, he said, would be outfitted with an internal separation system to allow it to have different chambers in the compactor, such as one for organic waste and another for plastic.
