St. Alban’s Primary School in Weston St. James is the first Primary School on the island to launch a Gavel Club.??Gavel Clubs have their genesis in the Toastmasters International, the leading organisation whose focus is promoting effective communication world-wide.

The St. Alban’s Sunshine Gavel Club, which started on March 5th, 2009, had its official launch on Monday, September 14th.??The group, consisting of forty-two members, was addressed by District Governor of Toastmasters, Ms. Joy Gittens, who is also Senior Education Officer in the Ministry of Education. ??

Ms Gittens applauded those pupils who were members of the Club and encouraged others to take the step to become a part of the movement.??In her speech which was entitled ???I Think I Can’, she challenged the members of the Club to build their courage and to always be positive thinkers.??She explained that the courage to stand and speak was bound up in being prepared and came through practice.??Ms. Gittens also told the pupils that being members of the Gavel Club would enhance their self-confidence and prepare them for future leadership roles.??It would also enhance their lives and have a positive impact on their lessons.

The Club, which has embraced the name The Sunshine Gavel Club, meets every Friday for one hour at the school, where pupils are trained as to how to conduct meetings and speak effectively in public.??
