The popular liming spot St. Lawrence Gap is set to return to its former glory days as an entertainment centre.
Word of this has come from Minister of Tourism and International Transport, Richard Sealy, who told reporters during a media briefing at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre, that although "The Gap" was in a transition phase at present, he was encouraged by the level of construction going on there.
The Tourism Minister said that although some businesses had closed, they had been reopened under different names and he was also pleased that a number of hotels and restaurants had embarked on major refurbishment of their properties.
"One of the busiest construction areas in Barbados right now is St. Lawrence Gap.?? All of the major properties are now under major renovation," Mr. Sealy added.
He cited the former Caf?? Sol and Reggae Longue as among once active spots that were undergoing major refurbishment and observed that the former Ship Inn had been rebranded under the name Sugar.?? He also noted that the iconic restaurant Pisces was also about to embark on major refurbishment.
Mr. Sealy further said that the popular Brazilian-styled restaurant, Paulo’s Churrasco Do Brasil was enjoying good patronage, while Divi Southwinds Hotel, was "currently working on a complete refurbishment that would include that section on the beach side of St. Lawrence Gap".
"Enough is planned for The Gap and enough is occurring that tells me we don’t need to get discouraged," the Tourism Minister assured.
Mr. Sealy also addressed security concerns and announced that Barbados Tourism Investment Inc. had completed the closed circuit TV project in The Gap.?? "The cameras are in operation and we would like to think that based on our capacity to interdict the crimes that may occur in those areas heavily populated by tourists…the increased use of technology may, in itself, serve as a deterrent for future events.
