Twelve-year-old Emmanuel Cherubin of the St. Leonard’s Boys’ School is set to receive the designation of Peace Ambassador from the Ministry of Education, Technological and Vocational Training (METVT), on Friday, June 17.

The title is being conferred on him for his act of bravery in saving an elderly man from drowning on Easter Monday, April 18.

The brief ceremony will be held at the St. Leonard’s Boys’ School, at Richmond Gap, St. Michael, from 11:30 a.m.  It is expected to be attended by Education Minister Kay McConney; Chief Education Officer, Dr. Ramona Archer-Bradshaw; as well as the boy’s parents and representatives from the school.

The second-former will be the second student this year to be honoured. He follows in the footsteps of 13-year-old Najari Chase of Deighton Griffith Secondary School, who received the award on Friday, April 8, for an act of honesty towards a British visitor. His deed occurred on Monday, March 28, at Oistins, Christ Church.

The designation of the METVT’s Peace Ambassador is the highest award given to any student between the ages of 10 and 18.  To be assigned such, a student should have demonstrated a positive action of national significance.

In 2018, the first Peace Ambassador award went to Ayra Newton, a student of Princess Margaret Secondary School, who refused to retaliate to an act of bullying, choosing instead to walk away.
