St. Maarten’s application for associate membership in CARICOM was among the areas discussed when that country???s Governor, Eugene Holiday, paid a courtesy call on Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Senator Maxine McClean.

During the recent meeting at the Ministry on Culloden Road, Governor Holiday said since St. Maarten had achieved its new constitutional status, the country was ???looking to become more involved in the Caribbean???.

He added: ???We are also looking forward to establishing closer bilateral ties with our sister countries. Barbados is one of those countries that stands out in the region. We have a lot of similarities when compared to other countries and I thought it was a good idea to???explore what the possibilities are.???

Governor Holiday also raised the issue of St. Maarten???s application for associate membership in CARICOM with Senator McClean. In turn, the Minister said St. Maarten???s request was being actively considered and pointed out that ???it is very critical for us as a regional project to embrace other countries within the region???.

Barbados and St. Maarten established diplomatic ties on December 12, 1969.
