As St. Peter prepares to roll out its activities for February to celebrate We Gatherin’ Barbados 2020, Barbadians are encouraged to visit that parish and learn about its heritage and culture.

Chairman of the St. Peter Parish Organizing Committee, Jacqueline Gill, said 30-plus events were on the calendar and some were expected to spur economic activity. She made the comments on Tuesday at a press conference at the West Wing of Parliament, to discuss We Gatherin’ in St. Peter.

Mrs. Gill said: “At the forefront of all our efforts is the goal to drive the growth of local businesses, and therefore the Parish Organizing Committee has been working with local enterprises to ensure their buy-in and have them be part of the planning and execution of our calendar.”

She pointed out that St. Peter’s signature event would be on Saturday, February 15, to celebrate Speightstown and the 350th Anniversary of the Settlement of the Carolinas.

“On that day, we will bring ‘Speightstown Alive!’ from 10:00 a.m. until 10:00 p.m. We will have a Street Market, a Genealogy Marketplace, Farmers’ Market, Entrepreneurs’ Hub, Food and Rum Pop up, among other activities.  The entire strip from Mahaica Playing Field to Arlington House will be transformed with a float parade, strolling entertainment, sweet jazz and a live heritage concert ….

“We have also organized a ‘Bountiful Brunch & Heritage Lunch’ where we have asked various restaurants across Speightstown to offer some of their tasty meals at discounted prices, allowing entrepreneurs and business owners in Speightstown to benefit.  We have also asked them to prepare special menus for the lunch and brunch,” Ms. Gill explained.

She noted that the Roots and Branches Art Exhibition would allow artists from the parish an opportunity to showcase their work.

She added that there would be Art Wednesdays, where students at schools in St. Peter would be engaged in painting murals and bins, as well as ‘Poetry at the Pub’, where local poets and spoken word artistes would perform at Fisherman’s Pub.

The activities will begin on Saturday, February 1, with the Gospel Gatherin’ St. Peter Give Thanks Concert at the Alexandra School Hall, Queen Street, beginning at 6:30 p.m.  Performers will include Pastor John Yarde, Sister Marshall, Debbie Jemmott, and The Gospel Persuaders.

Additional activities include Standpipe Stories under the Street Light, Whappaxx Road Tennis on Slamdown Fridays and a heritage walk. To find out more about the activities, please visit wegatherinbarbados.com.
