In an effort to develop more rounded Barbadian children, the St. Philip North Constituency Council has embarked on a new project for students in that catchment area.

The Inaugural Debate/Speak-Off Competition, which was launched today at the Hilda Skeene Primary School in Ruby, will involve five primary schools in the area: St. Philip, St. Mark’s, St. Catherine’s, Bayley’s, and Hilda Skeene.

Speaking at today’s launch, Chairperson of the Education Committee, Sandra Williams, said she hoped such an activity would build self-confidence and self-esteem among primary school students.

"When speaking in public some persons become nervous… and we hope that such a competition would enhance the language skills of students, build children’s confidence and create a friendly rivalry among the schools," Ms. Williams explained.

She added that the Constituency Council had a number of other projects and programmes in the pipeline for the St. Philip North community including assisting with school graduations, youth classes, nature walks throughout the parish, talent shows, school pageants and the Literacy and Numeracy Development Programme.

Minister of Housing and Lands, Michael Lashley, gave his full support to the competition, that revealing one of the projects which the Council was exploring was a minor housing rehabilitative programme.

He explained that it would improve the standard and quality of life for residents of St. Philip, particularly older persons living in the area.

Mr. Lashley appealed to persons with the requisite skills to volunteer assistance to the home repair project. (AS/BGIS)
