During excavation work for the construction of a new Barbados Water Authority (BWA) water storage tank at Fort George, St. Michael, an old water cistern system was discovered.

Upon being made aware of the structure, the BWA advised its contractors to immediately stop the excavation process.  It has been agreed that until further investigations can be executed by the Ministry of Energy and Water Resources, the Barbados National Trust and the BWA, work on the project will be halted.

The new reservoir, which is to be located next to the existing Fort George Tank, will have an increased capacity of 300,000 US gallons of water and is necessary to improve the water supply to over 25 heavily populated neighbourhoods in St. Michael and Christ Church.
