Statement from Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley on the passing of the President of Tunisia, H. E. Beji Caid Essebsi
On behalf of the Government and people of Barbados, I extend sincere condolences to the people of Tunisia on the passing of your president, His Excellency Beji Caid Essebsi.
While bearing the responsibilities for the welfare of a nation at the age of 92 can be no small feat, it is clear that until the very end President Essebsi was up to the task.
As the world’s oldest sitting president, he had the distinction of stabilizing and transforming Tunisia as a functioning democracy following the Arab Spring Revolution. President Essebsi succeeded in making Tunisia an example for his North African neighbours.
The people and Government of Barbados offer our prayers and our support to the Government and people of Tunisia in this their hour of sadness.
