Barbados remains on orange alert along with its Caribbean neighbours Grenada, St. Vincent and the Grenadines and Trinidad and Tobago following an increase in seismic activity around the Kick ???em Jenny submarine volcano.

Acting Director of the Department of Emergency Management, Kerry Hinds, today advised residents to remain vigilant and stay tuned to local radio stations for updates from national emergency management officials.

The islands were placed on an orange alert by the Seismic Research Centre in Trinidad yesterday following an increase in seismic activity around the Kick ???em Jenny submarine volcano located at eight kilometers or 4.32 nautical miles north of Grenada.??She explained that the orange alert meant that an eruption of the submarine volcano was possible as a result of the heightened activity.

Ms. Hinds repeated her call for persons to remain calm and on the alert. Persons in the shipping community have also been reminded to stay outside the first exclusion zone of 1.5 km from the summit, and non-essential shipping such as pleasure craft vessels, to stay 5km clear of the summit.

The Acting Director further stressed that the Kick ???em Jenny volcano was located in over 4, 000 feet of water, and therefore there was a very low potential for a tsunami at this time.
