Primary and secondary school teachers are being encouraged to participate in a storytelling workshop.?? It is being organized by the Media Resource Department (MRD) of the Ministry of the Education, Science, Technology and Innovation in partnership with the National Cultural Foundation (NCF) and will be conducted at the Elsie Payne Complex, Constitution Road St. Michael.
It will run from Monday, April 8 to Friday, April 12, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.?? However, on Saturday April 13, from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m., participants will be given the opportunity to showcase their storytelling skills gleaned throughout the period.
Sessions for secondary school teachers will be conducted in the auditorium of the MRD, while those for primary school teachers will be held in the Main Conference Room of the Ministry of Education.
A key aim of the workshop is to train educators at all levels about the fundamentals of dramatic story telling techniques in order to engage, entertain and encourage their own students to read and to love books.??
Participants will be: trained to encourage young people to read by getting them hooked on the story; taught an array of skills to use even as a novice storyteller and shown how to learn refreshing and innovative styles and skill sets as an experienced storyteller.
They will also be an interest in revitalising local and regional traditions and boosting the level of engagement with and profile of local and regional writing.
Course Coordinator for the workshop is Donna Tull-Cox, while tutors will include Varia Williams, Amanda Cumberbatch, Tony Thompson, Barbara Sandiford and Kenneth ???Jack’ Lewis.
The modules will include Types of Tales; Setting the Scene: Costumes, Props, Music, etc.; Characterisation; Rhythm and Movement and Interactivity.
