Householders and haulers are being urged to observe strict guidelines pertaining to the disposal of metal.
Word of the this has come from Waste Management Coordinator with the Solid Waste Project Unit, Thora Lorde, who?? has also underscored the need?? for persons,?? where practicable, to utilise the services of the relevant recyclers on island, in order to divert more garbage?? from the waste stream.??
Mrs. Lorde singled out beds, vehicle tyres and white goods (bulky wastes) for example stoves, refrigerators, televisions and microwaves as the major items of concern.
She reminded Householders that white goods should be transported to the Bagatelle Metal Disposal Site in St. Thomas.
Persons disposing of mattresses with metal springs or coils are advised that they "should be cut along the edges to remove the outer fabric from the springs or coils. The metal components of the mattress should be transported to the Bagatelle Metal Disposal Site, St. Thomas, for disposal, while the outer fabric and foam should be transported to the Sustainable Barbados Recycling Centre Ltd. (SBRC) at Vaucluse, St. Thomas."
"No one, should, for example, take a full mattress to SBRC," Mrs. Lorde maintained.
In terms of vehicle tyres with rims, the Waste Management official stressed that all tyres should be separated or removed from the rim. "Tyres should be transported to the Mangrove Pond Landfill, St. Thomas, for disposal, while the rim (metal) should be transported to the Bagatelle Metal Disposal Site, in St. Thomas," she explained.
Mrs. Lorde also emphasised that all vehicles transporting metal should proceed directly to Bagatelle.??
The Solid Waste Official pointed out that failure to follow these guidelines could result in further problems at the island’s landfills.
