Minister of Economic Affairs and Empowerment, Innovation, Trade, Industry and Commerce, Dr. David Estwick

Despite changes in the age range and demographics of the HIV/AIDS pandemic, Barbados is making progress in its attempt to curb the spread of this (deadly) virus.

Minister of Economic Affairs and Empowerment, Innovation, Trade, Industry and Commerce, Dr. David Estwick praised the efforts of health officials and others involved in HIV/AIDS awareness and HIV/AIDS outreach programme. The event, hosted by the Division of Trade, Industry and Commerce, was held in Heroes Square today.

He noted that: “We have had many successes of which we should be proud here in Barbados, because of the broad response that we have put together, and the resources that we have put behind our efforts. In particular …not only did we achieve success with respect to the provision of care; but also, through the development of the appropriate support services, such as the Ministry of Health’s Food Bank…,” Dr. Estwick said.

The Economic Affairs Minister also said that improved treatment modalities had resulted in a better quality of life for persons living with HIV/AIDS. “I think that this is manifested by the fact that we have had a reduction in the number of persons that have died from an AIDS related illness. This was achieved through a combined approach which is not only driven by the political will, but, one which coordinates many of the various sectors that play a role in curbing HIV/AIDS,” he surmised.

Dr. Estwick lauded the Ministry for the on-going campaign and appealed to Barbadians who have not been tested for HIV to come forward and know their status.
