Minister of Creative Economy Culture and Sports, John King. (FP)

Minister of Creative Economy, Culture and Sports, John King, wants to strengthen the link between culture and tourism.

Speaking at an Organization of American States sponsored workshop on Wednesday, the Culture Minister shared his vision for the two sectors.

“We need to continue to bridge the gap that exists between culture and tourism, which is prevalent throughout the Caribbean. We need more synergies and more collaboration between the two sectors, if we intend to develop sustainable creative economies and to diversify our tourism sectors; one sector depends on the other.”

Minister King suggested that tourists now demand more authentic experiences, and it was imperative that the two sectors work more closely together.

He revealed plans to further establish linkages between Barbados’ culture and tourism, stating that this would be part of the focus at the upcoming Ministers of Culture meeting, at which a draft Declaration of Bridgetown will be discussed.

The Organization of American States’ Eighth Inter-Ministerial Ministers of Culture and Highest Appropriate Authorities Meeting will be held on Wednesday, September 18, and Thursday, September 19, at Hilton Barbados.
