A call has gone out for stronger ties between the Inter -American Human Rights Commission (IACHR) and CARICOM.

This appeal has come from President of the IACHR, Felipe Morales, as he paid a courtesy call on Attorney General, Adriel Brathwaite, at his Cedar Court office last Monday.

Mr. Morales said it was essential to improve the relationship between the IACHR and CARICOM, so the Commission would be seen not only as a body, but as being open to discussion on various matters.

"Because of the lack of knowledge about the Commission, it’s important that more dialogue takes place.?? It’s important for the CARICOM countries not to just see the Commission as a body which supervises, but one that is open to dialogue," Mr. Morales added.

Attorney General and Minister of Home Affairs, Adriel Brathwaite, also spoke about the importance of CARICOM and the IACHR working together, and stressed that it would be beneficial to both entities.

"From a Caribbean perspective, I believe it is important for us to have more dialogue, to familiarise them [the IACHR] with our way of life and not just our laws.?? I believe that this is our opportunity to be proactive because the Commission, like the courts, has many functions and this relationship will be very beneficial and I pledge our continued support to the Commission," Minister Brathwaite underlined.??
