Students in primary and secondary schools across Barbados will soon have a stronger voice.

News of this has come as the Ministry of Education and Human Resource Development prepares to launch Student Councils within the island’s public schools.

According to Education Officer in the Teacher Evaluation Unit, Juanita Wade, the official launch is scheduled to take place on Wednesday, April 29 at the Frank Collymore Hall, Church Village, St. Michael. Ms. Wade pointed out that the initiative would allow students to play a more active role in their school lives.

“Student Councils will provide an outlet for students to participate in various activities that would benefit the school body. These include activities such as fund raising and beautifying of the school… students will also have the opportunity to voice their concerns about issues relating to the student body, as well as work on projects to improve the school’s atmosphere,” she explained.

Pointing out that the role of the Council would be “separate and distinct” from the role of the school Prefect, Ms. Wade explained that the Student Councils would be elected by the students themselves.

“The Councils will give children a chance to experience student government. The student body will elect a class representative, who will have the opportunity to campaign. It is an excellent opportunity for children to gain skills in areas such as debating and public speaking, as well as building self confidence,” she pointed out.
