A new logo will soon be utilised by the Ministry of Education and Human Resource Development in all its documentation and promotions.
This follows the recent award of first prize to 22-year old Sammawah Downes of the Barbados Community College (BCC) for his design adjudged the most "suitable" in the Ministry’s Art competition, held October 2011 to January 2012.
Sammawah’s design was deemed to have represented the competition’s theme: Overcoming Educational Challenges in the 21st Century, and he won an Acer Netbook compliments of Illuminat.
During the prize-giving ceremony last month (June 26) in the Minister’s Conference Room at the Elsie Payne Complex, Acting Deputy Chief Education Officer, Joy Adamson revealed that the Ministry would be using the piece of artwork in the future.??
She explained: "It’s a good initiative and it’s one the Ministry will be going ahead and using whenever possible as their kind of a brand?? for their posters, banners and other things so that when you see it you’d recognise that that represents the Ministry of Education. The young man, the winner Sammawah Downes, has done a very good job."
While expressing disappointment with the low number of entries over the life of the contest, she said: "We are very pleased with the ones that we did get and obviously with the winner and the description of the design of exactly what the logo represents."
Mrs. Adamson also issued a challenge to more companies to come forward and lend support to heighten interest by students. "This is something we hope other organisations would also get into, involving the youth in coming up with their designs because they have some very good fresh ideas; so that is something we want to continue with," she stressed.??
Coordinator of the initiative, Lisa Ashby-Andersson, in supporting the appeal, added that more sponsors should come on board and "see where their dollars are being spent because the students are their future employees".
The competition, which saw entries from first form to the tertiary level of the BCC, was judged by qualified Art teachers from across the island. Eleven-year-old Kelly Layne of Springer Memorial School placed second and won a BluRay DVD player compliments of Prudinc, while 14-year old Shonette Bailey of Springer Memorial School came third and received a cheque worth $400, compliments of Fujitsu Caribbean (Barbados) Ltd.
