The Frederick Smith Secondary and the BIDC have joined forces to launch??Entrepreneurship in Action. (FP)

As more young people are seeking to start their own businesses, one secondary school is taking the lead by encouraging its students to explore entrepreneurship by launching a programme called Entrepreneurship in Action.

The Frederick Smith Secondary, formerly the St. James Secondary School, and the Entrepreneurial Development Division of the Barbados Investment and Development Corporation (BIDC) introduced the programme in September 2011, to ensure that a select group of students were taught the rudiments of starting and managing their own businesses.

The classes, which lasted a full school year, trained participants in the use of Microsoft Word and basic negotiation skills.?? Additionally, students were introduced to a number of other subject areas, which served to make sure that persons were able to start-up and manage their own businesses successfully, after the completion of their secondary school education.

In addition to training the students, the Frederick Smith Secondary School and the BIDC started and completed construction on a building on the school’s premises. It will be used to house a business that will be managed and operated by this initial programme cohort.
