Students of The St. Michael School took part in a tree planting exercise yesterday, in celebration of International Girls in Information Communication Technology (ICT) Day 2019.

The initiative forms part of Caribbean. Girls. Hack., a regional hackathon for girls which is scheduled to take place here later this year.

One of the components of the competition, which is held under the theme: #ClimateSafeFutureSafe, is Climate Change and Resilience. Students usually undertake activities to reduce their carbon footprints.

The planting of trees, which was also scheduled to take place at the Coleridge and Parry School and Harrison College, will act as a carbon offset activity, raising the girls’ awareness and understanding of the importance of mitigating negative environmental impacts.

The trees were donated by the Ministry of Innovation, Science and Smart Technology. Similar tree planting activities have already taken place in Jamaica, Grenada, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and Trinidad and Tobago.
