Secondary school students are being reminded of the ???Guardians of Music Programme??? song competition launched last December, which aims to promote knowledge of copyright and the creative industries.

The programme, which is a collaborative effort between the Corporate Affairs and Intellectual Property Office (CAIPO), the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth and the Copyright Society of Composers and Publishers (COSCAP), is aimed at building respect for Intellectual Property and in particular copyright, the arts and local music.

In the first phase, each school will have an internal competition for best song, where entrants from the schools will be judged. Students will be able to enter the songs as individuals or in groups of up to seven persons.

The songs should have both lyrics and music and will be judged by a ???jury??? from each school, comprising three teachers and two students who are involved in music studies.

The criteria to be used in judging the songs will be determined by a committee of a representative from CAIPO and COSCAP respectively.

During the second phase of the competition, the songs that have been submitted by the schools will be reviewed and the top 10 songs will also be selected and recorded, following which the students will have the opportunity to determine the winning song.

Prizes will be awarded in the categories of overall best song; best composition and best lyrics.

In addition, the winner will perform the winning song at the annual Secondary Schools Inter School Sports Finals.

It is hoped the competition will encourage and stimulate creativity, camaraderie and team building as well as capture the interest of students in all aspects of music creation and production.
