Students from across the island have been reminded that "determination, consistent effort, learning from initial failure and overcoming obstacles" are prerequisites to achieving their goals.

Acting Minister of Education, Patrick Todd, told the pupils this today as he addressed the Annual Schools’ Outreach Programme at Solidarity House, entitled "Preparing Youth for the World of Work: Striving for Success in a Competitive World" and coordinated by the Youth Arm of the Barbados Workers’ Union.

The Acting Minister opined: "…Too few students see success as more than academic ability.?? It is true that some jobs require some level of academic qualifications, but all jobs need persons…who have embraced the good examples and values of the adults in their lives…who actively participate in programmes that build character and are involved in wholesome, non-academic activities that build team spirit, cooperation, leadership skills, and respect for self and others."

These, he noted, should include but not be exclusive to sports, social clubs, and uniformed and community groups.

The island’s students were also urged to see themselves as "privileged to be a part of a highly-rated educational system right here in Barbados that is rated third in the Americas, after Canada and the United States."

"Your opportunity to be recipients of this education is something that should not be taken for granted, but must be grasped with both hands," said Mr. Todd.
