Scores of primary school students were today treated to a familiarisation tour of one of Barbados’ historic buildings, the Prime Minister’s official residence, Ilaro Court.

The class four pupils of Society Primary, St. John’s Primary, St. Albans Primary, Holy Innocents and St. Mary’s schools were taken on a guided tour by Executive Personal Assistants, Roseita Green and Annette Lowe-Bowen.

They were able to see the spacious rooms with many historic artefacts and sculptures by Karl Broodhagen and paintings depicting the Careenage and Parliament Buildings.

Students were also shown the suite specially designed for the visit of President Clinton in 1997.

They were also taken on a stroll through the grounds of the 11-acre property, with its natural vegetation featuring Asian Mast trees, gazebos, local exotic palms and fauna and a pond filled with Tilapia.

Following the tour, the pupils watched a 20-minute documentary produced by Professor Henry Fraser outlining the building’s special features. The students were invited to visit Ilaro Court by Prime Minister David Thompson as an educational exercise and a way of stimulating interest among young people about Barbados’ historic buildings.?? clashley@barbados.gov.bb
