Persons with homes requiring minor repairs can now access assistance to the tune of BDS$10,000 through the Incremental Home Construction Programme (IHCP), a sub-component of the Housing and Neighbourhood Upgrading Programme (HNUP) of the Ministry of Housing and Lands, Urban and Rural Development.

The IHCP sub-component involves the provision of 600 subsidies totalling BDS$ 6 million to low-income families over the duration of the programme. The subsidies allocated will allow families to undertake minor repairs or renovations, including tiling, installation of doors, windows, partitions, cupboards, closets etc. to their homes and can represent a maximum of $10,000 or 90 per cent of project costs.

This programme was previously launched in 2010, but the Government has now agreed to reduce the financing requirements of applicants from 30 per cent to 10 per cent as well as to allow applicants to obtain quotations for their proposed projects from the Building Material Suppliers of their choice.

During this month, the HNUP will be re-launching the IHCP to the general public, by hosting several marketing activities.

The first of these will be held at Emerald City Car Park, Six Roads, St. Philip, on Saturday, May 7, from 9:00 a.m. to 12 noon.

The General Post Office will be the venue on Saturday, May 14, from 9:00 a.m. to 12 noon, and interested home owners can go to Super Centre, Warrens on Saturday, May 21, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. to learn more about the IHCP.

Applicants applying to this programme should be citizens of Barbados; have a combined maximum monthly income of BDS $2,666 or less; must not have benefitted from any previous housing assistance; must own the house and land to be improved; must own the house to be improved, but can be renting the land; and must secure the additional 10 per cent required to finance the proposed project.

HNUP is a BDS $80 million programme which is funded by the Government of Barbados and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).

Persons interested in this programme will be afforded the opportunity to interact with the staff of the Ministry on the specific days of the marketing activities or they can contact the Project Office of the HNUP at the Ministry of Housing and Lands, Urban and Rural Development, Country Road, St. Michael, at 620-3621/30.
