Barbadians are being encouraged to participate in various activities to commemorate this year’s Season of Emancipation.

Minister of Culture, Stephen Lashley, emphasised the importance of the season and said young people in Barbados would be sensitised about its significance, including the contribution of the 10 national heroes to the development of this island.

During a recent press conference to discuss plans to commemorate the period, Mr. Lashley expressed the view that the Crop Over "Read In", to observe the Day of National Significance on July 26, should not be missed. "It will take us back to what informed the 1937 uprising and by the spoken word of our artistes, we will reconnect again with that very important juncture of our history," he stated.

He added that the stories of the 10 national heroes would be included in the activities of the mid-June inscription ceremony for Historic Bridgetown and its Garrison.

Some of the other events to celebrate the Season will include a National Heroes Day Church Service at the St. Patrick’s Roman Catholic Cathedral, Jemmotts Lane, St. Michael; an activity on April 28 to focus on the Right Excellent Clement Payne, the driving force behind the social unrest of 1937; and a public lecture at Queen’s Park Steel Shed for UNESCO Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination on August 23.
