Minister of the Environment and Drainage, Dr. Denis Lowe

The best communications strategy to be implemented for sustainable land management will be up for discussion this Friday, May 4 during a Sustainable Land Management Workshop at the Savannah Hotel, Hastings, Christ Church, at 9:00 a.m.

Minister of the Environment and Drainage, Dr. Denis Lowe, will address the opening of the workshop, which is designed to come up with a communications strategy to deal with issues surrounding sustainable land management in Barbados.

It will target stakeholders including officials of the Ministry of the Environment, members of the project team and steering committees.

During the workshop, an environmental analysis will also be conducted to identify potential barriers to achieving the communications approach, and also identify strengths within the internal team that may be used to drive the execution of the project.

At the end of Friday’s meeting, a Stakeholder Analysis Report will be prepared outlining the agreed specifics coming out of the day’s proceedings.

This workshop forms part of a United Nations Development Project entitled: LDC-SIDS Targeted Portfolio Approach to Sustainable Land Management. The project is designed to promote the improvement of management practices, institutional arrangements, policies and incentives aimed at the attenuation of land degradation on fragile and unique ecosystems of small islands in the Caribbean.

The project started in January 2011, and is expected to execute three major components by June this year. Those components are: An institutional review of the Soil Conservation Unit, the development of a geographical information system for land management, and the development of a communications strategy for sustainable land management.
