Within a few days, Barbadians should find out the true incidence of domestic violence in this country.

The Bureau of Gender Affairs will sponsor a symposium on Wednesday, December 9, when the results of the survey conducted by the Caribbean Development Research Services Inc. will be released.

Persons who are interested in participating in the meeting, which will be held at the Harcourt Lewis Training Centre, Keith Bourne Complex, Belmont Road, St. Michael, should register with the Bureau, or call 310-2103/04.

"Emphasising the Kind in Mankind" is the theme of the seminar, which will be officially opened by Minister of Youth, Family and Sports, Dr. Esther Byer Suckoo, while Director of the Bureau, John Hollingsworth, will deliver remarks.

During the day, there will be presentations on "Barbados’ Efforts to Combat Domestic Violence" by Programme Officer at the Bureau, Patricia Hackett-Codrington; and "End Domestic Violence: A New Start, A New Life" by a representative of the Business and Professional Women’s Club of Barbados. Chairperson of SAVE Foundation, Liesel Daisley, will speak on "End Domestic Violence: We Can if We Think We Can".

There will be performances by Praise Academy of Dance, Red Plastic Bag and a skit by some staffers of the Probation Department.

This activity will bring the curtain down on events to observe November 25 as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence. The theme for the period is "Commit. Act. Demand: We Can End Violence Against Women".
