More than 300 secondary school teachers are being trained in various aspects of information technology during this summer holiday, in an effort to bring them up-to-date with this technology as it is introduced into schools through Government’s Education Sector Enhancement Programme (Edutech).

According to Edutech Programme Director Mark Ray, the initiative was coordinated by the Ministry of Education, which is responsible for the implementation of Edutech, and Illuminat (Barbados) Limited, the company contracted to provide academic software to the education system.

The training covers technology mastery and academic software and is in progress at Ellerslie Secondary and Queens College.  “Teachers will be exposed to many areas of technology usage including basic technology skills, integration of available technologies in the classroom for lesson preparation and presentation, and effective planning for the use of education technology”, he said.

Mr. Ray added that the training should also enable teachers to increase their competence and confidence when using technology and expose them to the relevant software which would be available to all secondary schools during the coming academic year.

The Programme Director lauded students at the Ellerslie Secondary School, for their support of the project through computer and network maintenance.  “The school has instituted a programme which allows students to use their expertise in computer repair and maintenance as well as network management to provide support for the teachers and trainers on the course at Ellerslie”, he said.
