Over 20 teachers are expected to attend a workshop on Home Economics tomorrow, Tuesday, April 15.

The Ministry of Education, Science, Technology and Innovation will conduct the workshop at the Lester Vaughan School, Cane Garden, St. Thomas, from 9.30 a.m. until 3.00 p.m.

A key aim of the session which bears the theme: ???Modifying Desserts to Create Healthier Alternatives??? is to sensitise teachers about reducing calories in desserts and improving the nutritive value.??The workshop will be both theoretical as well as practical.

It is expected to allow teachers to transfer the information to their students so that they (the students) may make informed choices as it relates to selecting ingredients which will reduce the calorie content of dishes.??In addition, it is hoped that the information will assist in curbing the rising number of persons suffering from chronic non-communicable diseases.??

Chief Nutrition Officer and member of the Non-Communicable Disease Commission, Diane Brome, will open the workshop. It will be facilitated by Home Economics teachers, Ericka Leacock and Hariette Medford.
